The temple was originally like a giant puzzle, rassembled piece by piece in order the sustain great cultural heritage. Sambisari temple consists of four building; one main building and three small building known as perwara temple. The main temple is unique since it does not have basement like another temples in java.

At the same time, the foot of the temple functions as the foundation to make the temple even on the ground. The foot is left plain without reliefs. In the entrance of the temple, there is an ornament of a dragon in the open mouth of makara (the magicial animal in Hindu mithology). The figure of makara in this temple is an evolution of India's makara that can be in the form of unification of elephant and fish or crocodile and curved-tail fish.
